Background
49North Operational Experience and Heritage
49North delivers sovereign Canadian defence capabilities with a focus on C4ISR and mission-critical systems, strengthening decision advantage in complex and contested environments.
Building on more than five decades of trusted Canadian defence delivery and prime contractor execution from MDA Space, 49North brings engineering discipline, operational reliability, and mission assurance to large, mission-critical defence programs.
The company integrates advanced sensing technologies, autonomous systems, secure digital mission systems, defence-qualified electronics, and long-term sustainment and in-service support of complex defence platforms across land, air, maritime, and joint domains.
Multi-Domain C4ISR Systems and Integration
49North delivers high-assurance command and control architectures and multi-domain C4ISR integration.
This includes foundational work on the Royal Canadian Navy’s MCOIN III Command and Control Information System, along with more than two decades of upgrades, modernization, and follow-on enhancements. The 49North team supports the integration of advanced ship sensors, multi-sensor surveillance systems, and secure C4ISR architectures enabling maritime domain awareness, vessel tracking and identification, and operational decision support for Canadian and NATO partners.
Advanced Sensing, Radar, and Integrated Data Fusion Technologies
The 49North team is responsible for the development and sustainment of advanced sensing capabilities, including the AN/APS-508 multi-mode synthetic aperture radar integrated on the CP-140 maritime patrol aircraft.
Designed and engineered in Canada, these sensing technologies integrate advanced signal processing, space-time adaptive techniques, and multi-sensor data fusion to detect and classify targets in complex operational environments. This expertise reflects sustained operational performance in demanding theatres and high-assurance systems integration.
Autonomous Systems
49North brings to bear extensive experience in autonomous systems integration and operational deployment.
Members of the 49North team support turnkey unmanned aerial system (UAS) services in expeditionary and domestic environments, achieving accelerated operational readiness and generating significant operational flight hours in support of Canadian and allied forces. Experience includes integration and sustainment of Class 1 and Class 2 UAS platforms and ground control systems supporting remotely piloted aircraft programs.
These capabilities reflect disciplined integration of, autonomous control systems, and mission assurance in complex operational contexts.
Secure Mission Systems and Defence-Qualified Electronics
49North includes secure digital mission systems and defence-qualified electronics expertise supporting high-assurance defence applications.
49North integrates secure C4ISR architectures, combat systems components, shipboard electronics, and mission software supporting Canadian and allied defence customers. 49North also delivers aviation software and geospatial solutions that enable instrument flight procedure design, aeronautical data management, and chart production systems used by allied defence organizations and national authorities.
These capabilities reflect secure digital engineering, certification discipline, and operational reliability in mission-critical environments.
Program Execution, Long-Term Sustainment and In-Service Support
A defining strength of the 49North team is long-duration program execution and lifecycle sustainment of complex defence platforms.
For more than 25 years, the corporate experience now aligned under 49North has included sustainment of the Kingston Class Mine Warfare System, CP-140 imaging radar systems, mini-UAV platforms, and submarine training systems for the Canadian Armed Forces. This support has extended to deployed and operational environments, reflecting field service capability, configuration control, risk management, and long-term performance accountability.
This execution discipline continues to inform next-generation C4ISR integration and defence platform modernization efforts.
