A New Canadian Defence Company, Built on a 50-Year Track Record
By Joe Armstrong, President, 49North
49North began with a clear opportunity: to build a new sovereign Canadian defence company on more than five decades of proven experience, focused on the capabilities Canada and its allies increasingly need in a more complex and contested security environment. What makes our origin story distinctive is that, while the company itself is new, we are not starting from zero. Behind us is an established record of delivering complex, mission-critical defence capabilities through MDA Space. Ahead of us is the opportunity to shape a next-generation company around the realities of today’s defence environment.
When I took on the role of President, that’s what excited me most! We can preserve the engineering discipline and operational reliability earned over decades, while creating an organization with a dedicated mission, a new identity and the agility to approach defence challenges in new ways.
49North was born from that opportunity and from a growing need for Canadian industrial capacity capable of integrating, delivering, sustaining and evolving complex defence capabilities at home.
A Defence Environment That Has Changed
Modern defence operations are increasingly connected, data-driven and multi-domain. A sensor detects something that does not belong. Information begins moving across systems. Data from multiple sources must be fused, assessed and delivered securely to the people who need it.
In a complex or contested environment, that chain cannot be improvised. Systems must work together. Information must be trusted. Capabilities must remain secure, interoperable and supported throughout their operational lives.
At the centre of this challenge is C4ISR: Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance. C4ISR brings sensors, platforms, networks, data and people together to help leaders see, understand, decide and act with greater speed and confidence, providing decision advantage in complex and contested environments.
Canada needs greater domestic capacity to integrate and deliver these increasingly complex capabilities at the scale major defence programs require. It needs organizations that can combine new technologies and new thinking with disciplined execution and long-term accountability. It also needs the sovereign capacity to understand, sustain and evolve critical systems in Canada while remaining fully interoperable with our closest allies.
That need was the spark for 49North.
A New Company
49North was formally launched in February 2026 as a wholly owned subsidiary of MDA Space, focused exclusively on defence and mission systems across non-space domains.
The company is new. The experience behind it is not.
Our heritage reaches back more than 50 years through MDA Space. The people, technologies and programs now brought together within 49North have supported Canadian and allied operations at home and abroad. That experience includes expeditionary operations, maritime surveillance and command systems, advanced airborne sensing platforms, and the long-term sustainment of critical defence assets.
It’s an enviable foundation that would ordinarily take decades to build: experienced people, proven capabilities, established programs and a culture accustomed to ambitious, high-consequence missions.
It also gives us a responsibility. We must use that foundation not simply to repeat what has been done before, but to build what Canada needs next.
Built Around Today’s Missions
Creating a new company gave us the opportunity to organize around the way modern defence missions are evolving, with a structure designed specifically for that purpose.
We are building 49North around three connected areas: C4ISR & Mission Systems, Maritime Systems and Uncrewed Systems. Together, they reflect the increasingly integrated nature of military operations, from gathering and interpreting information to connecting platforms, supporting command decisions and deploying capabilities across complex operating environments.
Across these areas, we bring together advanced sensing, radar and data-fusion technologies, autonomous systems, secure digital mission systems and defence-qualified electronics. We also provide the sustainment and in-service expertise needed to keep these capabilities mission-ready over the long term.
This structure gives us focus while allowing us to look across traditional boundaries. The challenges facing defence customers rarely fit neatly within a single technology, platform or domain. Our role is to understand the mission, bring the right elements together and take responsibility for delivering an integrated capability that gives operators and decision-makers an advantage when it matters.
Built for agility, backed by disciplined execution. There is real value in in building a new organization with the freedom to challenge familiar approaches. It allows us to move with greater agility, pursue new partnerships, adopt emerging technologies and look at difficult defence problems in different ways.
But defence delivery also demands discipline. Customers must know that commitments will be met, risks will be managed and critical capabilities will be supported long after they enter service.
49North is designed to bring those qualities together: the agility and focus of a new organization, backed by the engineering rigour, mission assurance and prime-contractor execution developed through decades of experience.
Our highest priority is straightforward: deliver capability to our defence customers in Canada and internationally and support it throughout its operational life. Whether we are leading a major program, integrating a mission system, advancing an uncrewed capability or sustaining a critical platform, success will ultimately be measured by what we deliver.
Sovereign by Design, Collaborative by Nature
49North was created as a sovereign Canadian defence company because Canada needs domestic expertise and industrial capacity to understand, integrate, sustain and evolve the systems on which its security depends. That sovereign capacity strengthens Canadian readiness and resilience while helping ensure the systems we field can operate securely and effectively alongside those of our allies.
Sovereign does not mean isolated. No company delivers modern defence capability alone, and Canada’s security is inseparable from its alliances.
We intend to work with Canadian innovators, established defence suppliers, academic institutions and international companies that share our commitment to secure, interoperable and mission-ready capability. For global defence companies, 49North offers an experienced Canadian partner with knowledge of the domestic environment, proven program discipline and experience supporting military customers internationally.
Our approach to prime-contractor execution is to take responsibility for integrating the whole capability while creating opportunities for strong partners to contribute what they do best. Building those partnerships is not secondary to our mission; it is fundamental to how we intend to deliver.
Building the Next Generation
I’ve spent more than 25 years working across Canada’s defence, aerospace and technology sectors, including leading programs delivered to military customers in more than 40 countries. That experience has taught me that successful delivery depends on more than technology. It depends on people, trust, accountability and a shared commitment to the mission.
Those qualities already exist across 49North and we’re bringing them together in this new organization with a singular defence focus and the freedom to build for what comes next.
For our employees, that means helping shape a company from its earliest days while working on missions of global importance. For customers, it means a new Canadian organization with the experience and execution discipline to take responsibility for complex programs. For partners, it means the opportunity to build alliances and teams capable of delivering at scale.
49North is a new company built on a proven Canadian defence legacy: created for today’s operating environment, designed to strengthen sovereign Canadian capability and focused on delivering the integrated systems Canada and its allies will need tomorrow.
That is the spark behind 49North. And it is only the beginning.
